A fire outbreak has destroyed several stalls at Makola Market in Accra following hours of heavy rainfall on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, but personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are currently at the scene battling the blaze and working to prevent it from spreading to nearby shops and structures.
The incident comes exactly 11 years after the June 3, 2015 twin disaster, when torrential rains triggered severe flooding and a deadly fire explosion at a fuel station at Circle, claiming hundreds of lives.
Eyewitnesses say the fire erupted amid persistent rainfall that has affected several parts of the capital. No casualties have been reported so far, although the extent of damage to goods and property is yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a storey building has reportedly collapsed at Adenta New Site, leaving several people feared dead and others trapped beneath the rubble.
Residents and bystanders have begun rescue efforts as emergency response teams are being mobilised to the scene. The number of casualties remains unknown.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates on both incidents as rescue and firefighting operations continue.
