Member of Parliament for Akatsi South and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has refuted claims that he acted in an unfriendly manner toward a journalist during a parliamentary engagement on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Ahiafor said the reports misrepresent what transpired and insisted he has always maintained a respectful relationship with the media.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to clarify that I hold the media in the highest regard and continue to value the indispensable role journalists play in sustaining our democracy,” he wrote.
He noted that throughout his years in public service, he has consistently engaged with the press, both formally and informally, adding that his track record speaks to his openness and respect for journalists.
“I have always maintained a cordial working relationship with the press… and have always been available to provide clarity on matters of public interest,” he said.
According to him, his concern on the day of the incident was not about the journalist in question, nor about the media as an institution, but solely about the manner in which the interaction was initiated.
“My concern on the said day was simply about the manner in which the interaction was being initiated, not with the journalist personally or with the media as an institution,” he explained.
He stressed that responsible journalism requires decorum and mutual respect, especially within Parliament, adding that it is not out of place to request a structured engagement.
The Akatsi South MP also indicated his willingness to speak with the journalist involved, describing him as a friend.
“I am open to a one-on-one conversation with my good friend, Yalley, just as I have consistently done with many others, including his senior colleague and my friend, Komla Klutsey, Bismark Kweku Asante and many other media reporters,” he noted.
Mr. Ahiafor reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the work of journalists and ensuring they have the access needed to inform the public accurately and responsibly.
He added that his doors remain open and looked forward to continued cooperation with the media fraternity.
