Five teenagers, aged between 11 and 18, narrowly escaped a mob attack by residents of Ekumfi Immuna in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region after they broke into three provision shops and stole items worth hundreds of Ghana Cedis.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, around 12:00 am.
The teenagers allegedly maneuvered their way into the shops and stole various items, including soft drinks, gari, sugar, milo, biscuits, sardines, flashlights, and yumvita.
Residents who witnessed the act told Metro News they heard someone breaking the padlock of a store and rushed to the scene, only to find the boys stealing.
They grabbed the boys and sent them to the Chief’s Palace.
Community Police Officer, Isaac Aggrey Atta, who assisted in dragging the suspected thieves to the palace, assured residents that enough security would be provided to protect their property.
Chief of Ekumfi Immuna, Nana Odwirey Ababio Vll, condemned the act, stating that it was not the first time such an incident had occurred in the community.
He expressed concern over the rate at which residents were complaining about losing their items to thieves.
The chief said the suspects would be sent to the juvenile cells and advised parents to keep a close eye on their wards and train them to stay away from stealing.
The suspects, who are currently at the police station assisting in investigations, claimed they were sent by their masters, who denied engaging them in any such act.
