Following a directive from President John Mahama, the government’s Flood Mitigation Task Force has begun a phased dredging and demolition exercise across parts of Accra to clear blocked waterways, restore drainage systems and reduce the risk of flooding ahead of future rains.
The exercise began with work in New England, behind Mayfair Garden Estates, the Tesa Dam enclave in East Legon and Oyarifa, where illegal structures obstructing natural drainage channels and dam banks were removed.
Authorities say dredging operations are also underway in the affected areas to restore the capacity of waterways and improve the free flow of water.
The next phase of the exercise will cover Weija, Mallam and Laboma as the government expands efforts to address flood-prone communities across the capital.
Officials say the initiative is part of a long-term flood prevention strategy rather than a temporary response. In line with the President’s directive, dredging, inspections and monitoring of drains, dams and waterways will continue throughout the year to keep drainage channels clear and help protect lives, homes and property from flooding.
