Following the devastating floods that struck parts of Tema on June 29, nearly 1,500 affected households in Tema Newtown have begun receiving relief items as the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) step up support for victims.
The relief exercise targeted residents in Waterland, Abonkor, the Apostolic area, Sentuo Down and the Pentecost area, where the floods displaced families and destroyed property.
A total of 1,489 households across three electoral areas received essential supplies, including bags of rice, cooking oil, mattresses, blankets, plastic basins, buckets, cups, bowls, mosquito nets, bathing soap, toilet soap and used clothing.
Authorities said priority was given to vulnerable groups, including elderly people, persons with disabilities and pregnant women, to ensure those most in need received assistance first.
The distribution exercise was attended by Unit Committee members representing the Assembly Members, the Tema Metropolitan Council Chairman, officers of the Ghana Navy, NADMO deputy directors and staff, as well as residents affected by the floods.
Officials said the relief operation will continue in other flood-affected communities across the metropolis as efforts to support victims and aid recovery continue.
