Former Education Minister Yaw Adutwum floats presidential ambition amidst NPP turmoil

Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has thrown his hat into the ring, signaling his intention to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, May 1, 2025, the Bosomtwe MP shared an artwork hinting at his ambition to lead the party.

“The silence of the noise, one man’s record speaks louder than mere campaign chants. One man’s impact echoes across every region. One man’s vision is what Ghana needs for a total Ghanaian transformation,” the text on the artwork read, accompanied by the hashtag #TheAdutwumFactor.

His announcement comes on the heels of recent developments within the party, including the withdrawal of Kennedy Agyapong, a former presidential aspirant, from the NPP’s nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ due to security concerns, as well as the decision of party Chairman Stephen Ntim to scale back his involvement in the exercise.

Meanwhile, sources suggest a potential rift between former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, with Dr. Bawumia possibly running for the flagbearership without Akufo-Addo’s endorsement. This alleged divide is reportedly tied to Akufo-Addo’s purported backing of former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong for the party’s 2028 presidential bid.

Mr. Adutwum’s bid adds to the growing list of potential NPP flagbearers, signaling a potentially heated contest for the party’s top position.

Meanwhile, former NPP presidential candidate Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise its presidential primaries ahead of all other internal elections.

He entreated the party to elect its next presidential candidate by December 2025 to ensure adequate time for preparation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
