Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has filed a defamation lawsuit against journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah, Peace FM, Pulse Ghana, and GhanaWeb.
The former GFA President is seeking 10 million Ghana cedis in damages following allegations made by Dan Kweku Yeboah, claiming that Nyantakyi embezzled $2 million from the GFA.
According to the lawsuit, Kweku Yeboah on the morning show Kokrokoo on October 17, 2024 said: “President Kwesi Nyantakyi nkoa ko yii GFA Sika Two Million United States Dollars (US$2m) efri Unibank ko di ye,” which translates to “President Kwesi Nyantakyi alone went to Unibank and withdrew GFA’s Two Million United States Dollars (US$2m) and embezzled or misappropriated it for his personal benefit.”
The lawsuit contends that these allegations were made without any factual basis and were aimed at damaging Nyantakyi’s reputation. The media outlets were included in the lawsuit for repeating Yeboah’s claims without verifying the facts.
“Due to these publications, the Plaintiff has suffered injury to his reputation, image, and feelings, leading to public hatred, scandal, ridicule, contempt, embarrassment, and a significant reduction in his dignity and credibility among right-thinking members of society,” part of the lawsuit read:
“The Defendants published or caused to be published the statements in question, knowing they were false and recklessly disregarding their truth or falsity.
“Furthermore, the Defendants acted with malice, spite, or malevolence towards the Plaintiff in making these publications.”
Nyantakyi’s legal team is seeking 10 million Ghana cedis in damages and a retraction from the defendants.
