The 2025 Civil Service Week officially kicked off on Wednesday, June 11, with the grand opening of the Interministerial Games at the Accra Sports Stadium.
This year’s event is special as it also marks the launch of the very first National Recreation Day, a new initiative aimed at promoting health, wellness, and fun activities for all workers in the public sector.
The Interministerial Games, now in its fourth edition, brings together staff from different ministries to compete in various sporting activities. The tournament will take place every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from now until the end of July 2025, giving workers across the country a chance to relax, stay active, and build strong relationships beyond the office.
The opening ceremony was colorful and full of life. Many important guests and dignitaries were present to show their support. Leading the event was Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darkoh, the Minister for Sports and Recreation. He encouraged civil servants to take recreation seriously and reminded everyone of the many health and social benefits of staying active. Also present were Hon. Kofi Adams, a strong supporter of youth and sports, and former Black Stars player John Paintsil, who received a warm welcome from the crowd. Renowned sports journalist and broadcaster Yaw Ampofo Ankrah was also in attendance and added his signature energy to the event.
Before the games began, there was a fun and lively aerobics session that got everyone moving and excited. Led by fitness instructors, the session helped warm up the body and bring smiles to the faces of both participants and spectators. After that came a penalty kick challenge, which brought laughter, cheers, and even some surprises, as both experienced players and beginners tried their luck at scoring goals.
The games officially started after these opening activities. Teams from different ministries faced off in a friendly but competitive spirit. Sports like football, volleyball, and athletics will be played throughout the tournament. More games and fun activities are expected in the coming weeks as the event continues.
The Interministerial Games are not just about winning medals. They are about teamwork, unity, wellness, and fun. The event gives civil servants the chance to take a break from their daily routines, connect with others, and enjoy healthy competition in a relaxed environment.
As the tournament continues over the next several weeks, excitement is expected to grow. Many ministries have already formed strong teams, and the public is looking forward to seeing who will come out on top. But more importantly, the games will continue to promote the message that healthy workers make a stronger public service.
This year’s Interministerial Games is already being praised as one of the best editions so far. With the successful launch of National Recreation Day, the Ministry for Sports and Recreation has shown its commitment to making physical activity a key part of working life in Ghana.
