Free SHS not cause of economic crisis – ASEPA

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has debunked claims that the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy is the cause of Ghana’s economic crisis.

According to ASEPA, the GHC9.9 billion spent on Free SHS since 2017 is just 7% of the total revenue accrued to the government in the last seven years.

Mensah Thompson, Executive Director of ASEPA, stated, “9.9 billion is only 7% of the total revenue that has accrued to this government in the last seven years. This cannot pose any significant strain on the economy as some people want us to believe.”

Thompson emphasized that the actual causes of the economic crisis are “reckless borrowing, reckless spending, dishonesty, misrepresentation of economic indicators, corruption, lack of investment, reckless closure of banks, political cronyism in government policy.
