Fuel, electricity and VAT shot up while we were praying and thanking God yesterday – Adomako-Mensah slams gov’t

Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has expressed concern over the recent economic measures implemented by the government, highlighting the contradictions between the country’s prayers for economic development and the actual policies being rolled out.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday morning [July 2, 2025], Adomako-Mensah, noted that while Ghanaians were praying and thanking God for economic development on Republic Day, the government was simultaneously introducing measures that would increase the cost of living.

“While we were praying and thanking God yesterday for economic development, there was also a 21.9% VAT on non-life insurance, a 5% increase in diesel, a 2% increase in petrol, a 2.5% increase in electricity tariff, and a 7% increment on plastic products,” he stated.

His comments come amid growing concerns about the impact of these economic measures on ordinary Ghanaians.

The increases in VAT, fuel prices, and electricity tariffs are expected to further strain household budgets and potentially slow down economic growth.
