G/A: Minister urges chiefs, security agencies to address emerging threats, highlights streetlight gains

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has called for enhanced collaboration between traditional leaders and security agencies to tackle ongoing threats to regional peace and development.

Delivering her address at the first Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) meeting of 2025, the Minister praised the relative calm following the electioneering period but flagged persistent issues including land guard activity, industrial unrest, and unresolved chieftaincy disputes.

The Regional Security Council (REGSEC), she noted, continues to meet monthly to monitor and respond to these threats.

“We implore the House of Chiefs and all security agencies to respond swiftly to help de-escalate tensions before they worsen,” she stated.

In a related development, Ocloo reported significant progress in efforts to enhance urban safety through improved lighting infrastructure.

As part of a broader strategy to support public security and the implementation of the government’s 24-hour economy agenda, the region achieved 70% functionality of its streetlights within the first 50 days of her tenure.

However, she expressed concern over growing cases of vandalism and theft of streetlight components, which threaten the sustainability of the gains made.

To counter this, the Minister called on MMDAs to:

Conduct regular audits and monitoring of streetlight systems

Collaborate with local security and community groups to protect infrastructure

“These efforts are not just about lighting roads—they’re about lighting the path to a safer, more productive Greater Accra,” she concluded.
