The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has warned that it will intensify pressure on the government to take concrete actions against illegal gold mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The union expressed disappointment with the government’s recent engagements with civil society organisations, describing them as unproductive.
Speaking during a fact-finding visit to the Birim River in the Eastern Region, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah, said the government’s efforts so far have been inadequate.
“Enough of the meetings and advocacy, we need action now. Galamsey must stop,” he stressed.
Mr. Ansah attributed the challenge to the country’s centralised land administration system, which he said limits the involvement of traditional authorities in curbing the menace.
He, however, assured that the TUC would support the fight against galamsey with measures to pressure the government to act decisively.
