Professor Kojo Yankah, a former Minister of State under the Rawlings administration, has expressed his disappointment and frustration with the current government’s handling of the galamsey (illegal mining) menace.
In a scathing Facebook post, Prof. Yankah stated, “I feel amused when I see intellectuals trying to play a balancing game on matters which demand direct criticism. We are talking Leadership here.”
He criticized the government for failing to take decisive action against galamsey operators, despite President Akufo-Addo’s initial promise to put his presidency on the line to tackle the issue.
Prof. Yankah noted that the government’s Inter-Ministerial Committee, backed by all security agencies, had made some initial progress, including the arrest of a Chinese woman, Aisha. However, he expressed dismay that she was released due to “diplomatic reasons,” emboldening other galamsey operators.
He also questioned the lack of action taken against those responsible for the brutal murder of Major Mahama and the failure to implement the recommendations of Professor Frimpong Boateng’s comprehensive report on galamsey.
Prof. Yankah emphasized that the government has the power and tools to address the issue but has failed to do so.
“Dancing around the subject and trying to justify or parry the blame is itself very hypocritical,” he asserted.
The former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Agona East Constituency further called for accountability and transparency.
“The Truth must be told. All Governments should be held accountable for their promises, actions, and inactions!”
