Galamsey menace a bigger threat than terrorism – Dr. Randy Abbey

Top Ghanaian journalist and host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Dr. Randy Abbey, has expressed his utter dismay at the lackluster approach to combating illegal mining, locally called galamsey in the country.

During the Tuesday, September 3, edition of his show, Dr. Abbey emphasized that the leadership’s nonchalant attitude towards the issue is a stark reminder of the country’s failed state.

“We are pretending that we are not a failed state,” Dr. Abbey lamented.

“From the National Security point of view, the issue of terrorism and the money we spend on it is important, but the galamsey issue is worse than the threat of terrorism.” He noted.

He attributed the thriving of galamsey to impunity, citing a lack of leadership and a culture of greed.

“It’s like there is no leadership; I don’t know how people wake up and call themselves leaders when you have such a level of impunity and degeneration. The level of greed in this country is astonishing, even Lucifer is astonished.”

His comments come after the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) expressed serious concerns about illegal mining in the Pra River, which is significantly disrupting their operations.

According to GWCL, galamsey is affecting its water supply in the Central Region, including Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas, leaving residents without water for days.
