Galamsey pit kills JHS 1 pupil in Akwatia

A 12-year-old orphan of the Boadua Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS) has died after falling into a mining pit close to his home in the Eastern Region’s Boadua suburb of Akwatia.

His corpses have been placed at the Akwatia morgue of St. Dominic Catholic Church.

The tragic incident occurred early on March 6, 2025, Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebrations.

Some people continue to mine indiscriminately and illegally in Akwatia, Kade, Oda, Asamankese, Kyebi, Ayensuanor, and other communities despite repeated calls from civil society organizations (CSOs) and the presidency to stop the nation’s illegal mining activities. Armed and operating with impunity, these galamsey operators aim to confront authorities about the damaging activities that pose serious environmental problems.
