Galamsey: Two Organised Labour leaders acted alone in calling off strike – Prof. Gyampo

Professor Ransford Gyampo, President of the University of Ghana, Legon chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-TAG), has dropped a bombshell, accusing two leaders of Organised Labour, Joshua Ansah and Dr. Isaac Bampoe, of unilaterally calling off the strike against illegal mining.

In an explosive interview on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Prof. Gyampo revealed that Joshua Ansah and Dr. Bampoe showed up to a crucial meeting with a pre-prepared speech, calling for the suspension of the strike.

Ransford Gyampo further mentioned that out of about 65 representatives present, only five had spoken, and even they rejected the grounds for calling off the strike.

According to him, the two individuals’ actions were questioned by other members, prompting the two leaders to apologise.

Meanwhile, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has declared an indefinite strike across all 15 branches, starting today, October 10, 2024.

This decision follows a referendum where an overwhelming 77.95% of members voted in favor of industrial action to support a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting in forest reserves, farmlands, and rivers.

According to UTAG’s National President, Prof. Mamudu A.Akudugu, this decisive outcome “reflects the unwavering commitment of UTAG members to protect our environment and livelihoods from the destructive impact of mining activities in ecologically sensitive areas.”
