A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai constituency, Charles Obeng, popularly known as Sir Coke, has called on Ghanaians to change their mindset towards illegal mining, warning that the practice threatens the nation’s future.
Sir Coke said illegal mining, or galamsey, brings nothing but destruction and should be eliminated completely. He urged citizens to resist the temptation of leasing farmlands to illegal miners, stressing that lands destroyed by galamsey become useless for agriculture or any meaningful development.
Sir Coke alleged that some community leaders, including chiefs, politicians, and assembly members, are complicit in the illegal mining trade. However, he praised individuals like the Chief of Sefwi Subri and former Anhwiaso Electoral Area Assembly Member, Hon Gyasi Newlove, for rejecting huge financial offers from miners who wanted to operate in their areas.
“A leader involved in galamsey cannot tell others to stop,” he remarked, questioning how many people could follow the example of those who refused to compromise their integrity.
Sir Coke further expressed concern that many Ghanaians fear speaking against illegal mining due to threats from the miners themselves. He warned that the continued destruction of water bodies and farmlands will have long-term consequences for future generations.
“The rivers we used to drink from are now polluted. The land can no longer support farming. Those engaged in galamsey should advise themselves because the harm they are causing will come back to haunt their own children,” he cautioned.
