Illegal miners at Wasa Dadieso in the Western Region are destroying critical installations, including roads, electricity transmission poles, water pipes, and bridges, with impunity.
The miners, operating in the center of the town, are exposing buildings to possible collapse and inhabitants to danger.
The Ayanfuri-Wasa Akropong road is also being destroyed, with miners operating close to the highway and desecrating the road shoulders.
Bridges along the Dadieso-Japa stretch are at risk of being overtopped during heavy rains, while telecommunication broadband cables and water supply pipes have been destroyed. Electricity transmission poles are also being undermined, causing a risk of collapse.
The illegal mining site in the Dadieso township is owned and operated by the Assemblyman, Yaw Darko, while other sites are owned by an individual known as Mr. Bekoe.
Nana Oteng Ababio II, Chief of Wasa Dadieso, expressed concern about the activities of the illegal miners, but said he was helpless due to their apparent strong backing.
The Chief called on authorities to intervene and deal with the situation, citing several accidents caused by trucks moving from the galamsey site onto the highway without signals, putting commuters at risk.
