Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has formally withdrawn a motion filed at the High Court in Accra seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed on him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The motion, filed on May 30, 2025, was scheduled to be heard on Tuesday, June 3. However, Wontumi’s legal team, led by private legal practitioner Gary Nimako, withdrew the application on Monday, June 2, just a day before the scheduled hearing.
Chairman Wontumi had previously challenged the GH¢50 million bail amount and the requirement for two justified sureties, arguing through his legal representatives that the terms were excessive and potentially punitive.
The application had sought the court’s intervention to amend the bail conditions, citing concerns outlined in a supporting affidavit. However, the legal team deemed the court’s intervention unnecessary after successfully meeting the bail requirements.
Lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that all necessary documentation for the two sureties had now been completed, making the motion redundant.
He credited the swift resolution to support from various quarters, noting in particular the role played by former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
“With the sureties now accepted and all paperwork completed, there was no need to proceed with the court application. The situation is under control,” Appiah-Kubi stated.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on May 27 and granted bail three days later. Delays in satisfying the bail conditions had prolonged his stay in custody, prompting legal action to seek relief. With the recent developments, he is now expected to be fully cleared for release.
