The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has visited Bukom to console families affected by the recent road accident that claimed the life of a young woman and left several others injured, assuring them of the government’s support as they recover from the tragedy.
Dr Lartey, accompanied by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, visited the scene of the accident, the home of the deceased and the residences of some survivors to express the government’s sympathy and assess the needs of those affected.
Speaking to the bereaved family and residents, the minister described the incident as heartbreaking and extended the government’s condolences to the family of the deceased and those receiving treatment.
“We are here to express our deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family and all those who were injured. It is heartbreaking that a young lady in the prime of her life has been lost. We pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving medical care and wish them strength as they heal,” she said.
Dr Lartey said President John Dramani Mahama directed her and the Greater Accra Regional Minister to visit the affected families after learning about the incident through media reports, so they could assess the situation firsthand and offer the government’s support.
She said while some of the injured victims had been discharged from hospital, others remained on admission. According to her, the government will assess the needs of the injured to determine the kind of assistance that should be provided.
On support for the bereaved family, the minister explained that because the matter is before the court, the government would wait for the appropriate legal process before deciding on the next course of action.
She also stressed the need for improved road safety to help prevent similar incidents in the future. She said the Greater Accra Regional Minister would work with the Mayor of Accra and the area’s Member of Parliament to engage relevant stakeholders on practical measures to improve safety in the community.
Dr Lartey praised the youth and residents of Bukom for their swift response after the accident, saying their efforts helped rescue several victims and ensured the deceased was treated with dignity.
“We are grateful to the young people and the entire community for their compassion and solidarity during this difficult moment. Your prompt response undoubtedly helped many of the victims,” she added.
The delegation also included the Member of Parliament for the area, Alfred Nii Ashie Kotey, and the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
