George Afriyie, former Vice Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has named six personalities he believes deserve recognition at the inaugural Metro Sports Awards 8 in 8, an event dedicated to honoring sports personalities who have made a significant impact over the past eight years.
A total of 17 nominees have been shortlisted for the Metro Sports Awards 8 in 8, with eight set to be celebrated for their exceptional contributions to sports during this period.

In an interview on Metro Sports with renowned sports journalist Michael Kofi Oduro, George Afriyie shared his personal picks from the list of nominees.
“I would choose Robert Coleman, Dr. Ben Asante, Charles Osei Assibey, Dr. Kwame Kyei, Dr. Richard Nsenkyire, and Moses Parker,” Afriyie said.
He then went on to explain why he selected these personalities:
“I pick Coleman because he has been instrumental in the development of pitches across the country. To grow football, you need strong infrastructure, and Coleman has committed himself to ensuring we have pitches nationwide.”
“Dr. Ben Asante, from Ghana Gas, has funded many of these projects you’ve mentioned, I think about 80% of them. Many CEOs have the opportunity to do what he does, but they don’t. Dr. Asante’s passion for sports goes beyond just funding. He’s also financed projects like the Theodosia Okoh hockey pitch.”
“In that contest. I’ll put our brother Charles Osei Assibey. It’s no easy task to take an unknown sport like arm wrestling and elevate it to where it is today. Charles has worked tirelessly to grow the sport, and he absolutely deserves recognition for his efforts.”
“Dr. Kwame Kyei is another choice. He single handedly handled Kotoko. Now look at how he has branded Nations FC. Look at the old Kesbben stadium, he has been able to transform it into a modern stadium.
“Doctor Nsenkyire, wonderful man. This is a man who doesn’t talk, but he speaks by his actions. He’s one of the people who has made sure that the people within the western part of our country see football.”
“Lastly, Moses Parker. He needs no introduction. His love for football is well-known, and he played a crucial role in securing the Takwa Sports Stadium. His efforts have been instrumental in the growth of football in the region.”
“These are the reasons why I’ve chosen these people,” Afriyie concluded.
The awards ceremony is set to take place on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the Metro TV studios. The winner will be determined through a poll that will run from Monday, January 20, to Tuesday, January 28, on the station’s social media platforms.
