GES Teacher Promotion Exams: A Simple Guide for Candidates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued comprehensive guidelines to help teachers prepare adequately for the 2025 Teacher Promotion Examinations.

Below is a simplified guide to what candidates need to know and do ahead of the exams.

  1. Are the Promotion Exams Happening?

Yes. GES has confirmed that “the promotion examinations will be conducted as scheduled.”

The examinations will be held over two days:

  • Monday, December 29, 2025 (9:00 am. – 12:00 noon) Assistant Director II (AD II) and Principal Superintendent (PS)
  • Tuesday, December 30, 2025 (9:00 am. – 12:00 noon)
Assistant Director I (ADI) and Deputy Director (DD)

Candidates are expected to report to their designated centres on the correct day for their category.

  1. Who Is Eligible to Write the Exam?

Only shortlisted candidates are eligible.

According to GES, “shortlisting was conducted strictly in accordance with approved eligibility criteria and documentation requirements.”

To qualify, a candidate must:

  • Have received an official SMS from GES, or
  • Have their name on the shortlisted list displayed at approved offices and centres
  • Have been issued an index number

GES cautions that “only candidates who have been issued index numbers are permitted to report to examination centres to write the examination.”

  1. How Can Candidates Verify Their Status?

Shortlisted candidates can verify their details at:

  • Regional Education Offices
  • Municipal, Metropolitan and District Education Offices
  • All designated examination centres

GES has also indicated that “a list of eligible candidates will be circulated to Regional Education Offices and examination centres a day before the commencement of the examinations.”

  1. What If a Qualified Teacher Was Not Shortlisted?

GES has provided a window for redress. Teachers who:

  • Obtained their last promotion or upgrading in or before 2021
  • Met all qualification requirements
  • Applied for the current promotion

but did not receive an SMS or find their name on the list must submit the following to their Regional Education Office:

  • A copy of their last promotion or upgrading letter
  • Evidence or printout showing that they applied for the current promotion

This is to enable GES to address “any legitimate cases of omission.”

  1. What Must Candidates Bring on Exam Day?

On the day of the examination, candidates must:

  • Present a valid National Identification Card
  • Clearly indicate their Staff ID and Index Number on all examination papers

Failure to meet these requirements could result in disqualification.

  1. Who Should Not Go to the Examination Centre?

GES has issued a strict warning that:

  • Teachers who did not receive an official SMS
  • Teachers who have not been issued an index number

must not report to any examination centre.

The Service emphasised that “any candidate without an index number will not be allowed to write the examination.”

  1. Where Can Candidates Seek Help?

Candidates who encounter challenges or require clarification can contact GES via:

  • Phone or WhatsApp: 0550326931
  • Email: gespromotionexams@gmail.com

Final Reminder from GES

Management has appealed to all teachers to comply fully with the guidelines to ensure “a smooth, credible, and well-coordinated promotion exercise,” adding that all further communication will come only through official GES channels.
