Heads of Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHSTS) risk disciplinary action if they deny duly admitted students accommodation because of the type of trunk, chop box or personal storage container they bring to school.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) issued the warning in a directive dated September 18, 2026, following reports that some schools were turning away newly admitted students over their choice of storage containers.
According to the GES, schools are required to accommodate duly admitted boarding students as long as the items they bring are reasonably sized, safe and do not pose a risk to the health, safety or welfare of others.
The Service has directed Regional Directors to ensure that Heads of Schools comply with the directive and investigate any reported cases of students being denied accommodation solely because of the type of storage container they use.
The GES warned that school heads who disregard the directive will face sanctions.
“Any Head of SHS/SHSTS who flouts this directive shall be dealt with in accordance with the applicable standards, regulations and laws of the Service,” the directive stated.
The GES said the measure is intended to prevent practices that could impose unnecessary financial pressure on parents and guardians who may be unable to afford specific storage containers prescribed by individual schools.
The directive further requires Regional Directors to report cases involving the denial of accommodation on such grounds to GES Management for further action.
