Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, the Head of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has revealed that the FA is fully supporting Coach Otto Addo.
Since returning to the Black Stars earlier this year, Otto Addo has faced criticism due to a series of poor results. Ghana risks missing the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004 after failing to win any of their first four AFCON qualifying matches, picking just 2 points.
This disappointing performance has increased pressure on the coach, with many Ghanaians calling for his dismissal. However, Armstrong-Mortagbe has confirmed that the FA stands firmly behind him.
“The FA engaged Otto Addo on a long-term basis, and based on his early performances against Mali and the Central African Republic, we believe there’s potential for growth for the nearly three years he was engaged for,” he said in an interview with Michael Kofi Oduro on Metro TV.
“Unfortunately, our AFCON qualifying series hasn’t gone as we hoped, but he remains in charge with the backing of the FA and the Executive Council. We expect to see improvements in our upcoming World Cup qualifiers, indicating that what happened previously was an anomaly, not a trend.
When asked about Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the AFCON, Neil Armstrong stated, “The results this month will be telling. As long as there’s a mathematical chance, we won’t give up. It’s either never say die or ‘wou kum ap3m ap3m beba.’
The Black Stars will play their final two AFCON qualifiers against Angola at Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda on Friday, November 15, 2024, and then face Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Ghana will need to win both games, while also hoping for Sudan to stumble in order to qualify for the AFCON to be played in Morocco next year.
