Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has clarified that it is not the responsibility of the GFA to disclose the budget for the Black Stars but rather the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
His statement follows remarks made by President John Dramani Mahama during the State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, where he directed the Minister of Sports and Recreation to ensure greater transparency by making the budgets for national teams public.
“Next month, the senior national team, the Black Stars, now a shadow of their former selves, will be in action. I have instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable, particularly on the budget for the team,” Mahama said.
“There will be no secrecy in how much money the government puts into the national team. The budget that is presented by the FA and other associations must be made public because it’s the taxpayers’ money,” he added.
In response to the President’s comments, Asante Twum pointed out that while the GFA plays a key role in managing the Black Stars, it is the Ministry of Youth and Sports that is responsible for making the budget public.
“Making the Black Stars’ budget public is not the responsibility of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). It is the responsibility of the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” Asante Twum said in an interview with Sports FM.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars are aiming to put behind their disappointment of failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they prepare to resume international duty with the World Cup qualifiers next month.
Ghana will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025, before traveling to Morocco to face Madagascar on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Currently, with nine points from four matches, Ghana occupies second place in the group, tied with Comoros on points but trailing by goal difference.
