GFA President Kurt Okraku announces imminent deal for new broadcast rights holder for the Premier and Division One League

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has revealed that the association is set to announce a new broadcast rights holder for the Ghana Premier League (GPL) in the coming days.

The GPL has lacked an official broadcast partner since the season began, costing clubs millions in lost revenue. With broadcast rights being a major income source globally, the absence of a deal has placed added financial strain on teams.

Speaking on the issue in an interview with Michael Kofi Oduro on Metro Sports, Kurt Okraku pointed out the importance of broadcast revenue to the growth of the game and assured stakeholders that the FA is committed to securing a deal that works for everyone.

“We on the Executive Council are fully aware that broadcast revenue is the biggest revenue stream available to football in our era. It is, therefore, essential for every Member Association (MA) to identify the best ways to tap into this potential.”

He noted that the GFA has been testing different models in recent years to find the right fit.

“In Ghana, we’ve experimented with different models. This year, we embarked on a new path, an evolved model aimed at generating greater financial returns for our clubs. Naturally, people tend to resist change, so we expected mixed reactions from stakeholders when new models or ideas were introduced.”

The GFA President also addressed the breakdown of the association’s previous relationship with broadcast partner StarTimes.

“Our last deal with StarTimes didn’t end well, and that hurt our clubs financially. But I want to make it clear, we remain fully committed to finding a strong, reliable broadcast model.”

Looking ahead, Kurt Okraku assured stakeholders and football fans that a major announcement will soon be made regarding the future of television coverage for the domestic leagues.

“In the coming days, we’ll share details of our new TV partnership, especially for the Premier League. I truly appreciate the patience of our clubs during this time, and I believe they’ll be pleased with what’s coming, not only for the Premier League but also for Division One,” he added.

The new deal is expected to increase visibility for Ghana’s local leagues and give clubs the financial boost they’ve been waiting for.
