The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has cautioned individuals and groups against the use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements without authorization.
The Ghana Armed Forces in a statement issued on October 14, 2024, said it has observed with dismay the increasing unauthorized use of military-pattern uniforms by protesters, individuals providing security for public figures, and persons operating in illegal mining areas.
GAF notes that these actions “risk creating a false impression that these individuals are part of the Armed Forces, tarnishing its reputation.”
Moreover, the misuse of military attire can facilitate impersonation and enable criminal activities, posing a serious threat to public safety.
The statement cited the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which explicitly states: “No person shall wear or use any military uniforms, equipment, or accoutrements or other material unless he or she is a member of the Armed Forces of Ghana.”
In light of the security implications, GAF warned that it “will henceforth take decisive actions, including the arrest of persons who violate these regulations to face the full rigor of the law.”
The public is urged to report any suspicious activities involving unauthorized military attire.
As the country approaches the 2024 general elections, GAF reassured the public of its “unwavering commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining the territorial integrity of Ghana.”
