Chief of Army Staff Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu has visited troops taking part in Exercise Storm Shield 2026 in the Upper East Region as the Ghana Armed Forces steps up efforts to strengthen the country’s security against terrorism threats.
The exercise, which began last week, is aimed at equipping troops with the skills and operational readiness needed to respond to potential terrorist attacks and other security threats. It is expected to end on May 20.
The visit by the Army Chief was part of efforts to assess the preparedness and combat readiness of personnel participating in the operation.

Exercise Storm Shield 2026 is being held in the Pusiga District and the Bawku Municipality, areas considered critical to ongoing national security operations in northern Ghana.
The exercise also involves other security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Prisons Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division, which are working alongside the military in various operational roles.
Military authorities say the joint exercise is intended to improve coordination among the security services and reinforce Ghana’s ability to respond effectively to emerging threats.
