The Government of Ghana has evacuated 44 more citizens from South Africa as part of the second phase of its repatriation exercise in response to the ongoing wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The latest batch of evacuees arrived at the Accra International Airport on Wednesday, August 6, 2026, where they were received by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration. Their arrival brings the total number of Ghanaians repatriated from South Africa since the exercise began in May 2026 to 1,368.
Welcoming the returnees, the Ministry’s Chief Coordinator for Political and Economic Affairs, Ambassador Harold Agyemang, thanked God for their safe return and reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians wherever they may be.
He assured the evacuees that the government would continue to support their successful reintegration into society and encouraged them to remain optimistic despite their ordeal. He urged them to draw on the skills, knowledge and resilience they gained during their stay in South Africa to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
Ambassador Agyemang further disclosed that the government would profile all returnees by assessing their skills, qualifications and career aspirations. He said the exercise would enable the state to provide targeted employment opportunities, livelihood support and other interventions to facilitate their resettlement.
As part of the reintegration package, he announced that each returnee would receive a government-funded cash grant to help them restart their lives and ease their transition back into their communities.
Officials from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross Society, Port Health authorities and other state institutions were also present at the airport to provide immediate assistance and ensure a smooth reception for the returnees.
Government officials indicated that additional Ghanaians are expected to be evacuated from South Africa in the coming days as the second phase of the repatriation exercise continues.
