The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced plans to host a grand testimonial match to celebrate the remarkable career of Asamoah Gyan, one of the most iconic figures in African football. This tribute comes as the GFA and the football world at large seek to recognise Gyan’s legendary status and his monumental contributions to the Black Stars and the wider footballing community.
Gyan, affectionately known as “Baby Jet,” has left an unforgettable mark on the history of Ghanaian football. As the all-time top scorer for the Black Stars with 51 goals in 109 appearances, Gyan’s journey has been one of dedication, talent, and leadership. His record also extends to the international stage, where he remains Africa’s highest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history with six goals across three tournaments (Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, and Brazil 2014).
The testimonial match, which is still in the planning stages, will celebrate Gyan’s incredible career that spanned continents and saw him play for top clubs across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Starting at Liberty Professionals in Ghana, Gyan went on to showcase his skills at clubs like Udinese in Italy, Rennes in France, and Sunderland in England’s Premier League. His extraordinary performances and goal-scoring ability earned him stardom in the UAE with Al Ain and Al Ahli, and later in China with Shanghai SIPG, before wrapping up his career with Legon Cities FC in his home country.
With his leadership and charisma both on and off the pitch, Gyan has been a beacon of hope for young footballers in Ghana and across Africa. He has also played an instrumental role in popularising African football on the global stage, drawing attention to the continent’s vibrant football culture.
The GFA, in collaboration with Gyan himself, will release full details of the event in due course. Fans can expect an unforgettable night of celebrations, with an opportunity to relive some of the most memorable moments from Gyan’s illustrious career.
