Ghana gets 2,000 tonnes of fertiliser from Morocco

Ghana has received a second shipment of 2,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser from Morocco, in a move officials say will support food production and strengthen growing ties between the two countries.

The consignment was handed over in Accra on Wednesday, with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, thanking Morocco on behalf of the government and people of Ghana.

He said the donation reflects deepening cooperation between Accra and Rabat, particularly in agriculture. Mr Ablakwa recalled recent talks with Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, where Ghana signalled its interest in expanding collaboration in the sector.

He said Morocco has a strong advantage in fertiliser production, backed by technical expertise and advanced research, including in seed development. Following those discussions, Morocco sent technical experts to Ghana, leading to closer work with institutions such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

Mr Ablakwa said the partnership is expected to go beyond donations, with plans for Ghana to develop its own fertiliser production capacity. He said the country is working towards establishing a local fertiliser plant with technical support from Morocco.

He added that relations between the two countries have widened in recent years to include travel, tourism, business and sports. Both countries have eased visa requirements, leading to increased movement of people, especially for trade and tourism.

The minister said the fertiliser will support government efforts to boost food production and reduce imports, including the Feed Ghana programme, which focuses on irrigation, improved seedlings and livestock.

He said the delivery comes at a crucial time, as global supply pressures linked to tensions in the Middle East continue to affect fertiliser availability and prices.
