Ghana in talks to take possession of Nkrumah’s Guinea residence – Ablakwa

Ghana has commenced negotiations with the family of Guinea’s former President, Ahmed Sékou Touré, to take possession of the house where Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, lived and worked as Co-President of Guinea in his final years.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed the development in a Facebook post, stating that the initiative was undertaken “on the instructions of President John Mahama.

The proposed move forms part of the Mahama administration’s plan to renovate and preserve Nkrumah’s residence in Conakry, not only as a mark of respect but also as a means to safeguard the legacy of Ghana’s founding father and boost tourism.

“The Mahama Administration intends to renovate and preserve Nkrumah’s Guinea residence not only as an act of respect but also to preserve the Osagyefo’s legacy and create a full experience for tourists to follow Nkrumah’s outstanding life from Ghana to Guinea,” the minister wrote.

Okudzeto Ablakwa explained that the decision was conveyed to the Sékou Touré family during a visit on Saturday, led by Ghana’s Vice-President, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. The visit also included a tour of Nkrumah’s abandoned home in Guinea.

The minister noted that the delegation was received by “three generations of the Sékou Touré family led by his eldest son.”

The trip followed the investiture of Guinea’s President, Mamady Doumbouya.

According to Ablakwa, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently negotiating “the terms and conditions” for the transfer, while also engaging preservation experts for the restoration project.

He added that the government will ensure full public accountability throughout the process.

“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, the Ghanaian public shall be fully apprised at every stage.”
