The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has led the country into its worst crisis since independence.
Speaking to traditional rulers and the clergy in Zebilla, Mahama chastised the NPP for taking Ghanaians through hardship, describing it as the worst crisis ever since independence.
Mahama made the statement on the second day of his Upper East Regional tour, where he interacted with party faithfuls, traditional, and opinion leaders in the Binduri, Zebilla, and Nabdam Constituencies.
In Zebilla, traditional rulers reiterated their call for a new region in the Upper East Region when the NDC comes to power.
In a related development, a 75-year-old man, John Abugri, who was the NPP polling station chairman for Tebilla in the Binduri Constituency, has resigned from the party and joined the NDC.
Abugri, who supported the NPP since the era of Adu Boahen, cited insecurity in Bawku, economic hardship, and high fertilizer prices as reasons for his defection.
He apologized to the NDC and requested baptism from John Mahama.
Other residents who thronged the Binduri Senior High School to cheer the NDC held placards with inscriptions such as “we need peace in Bawku” and “high fertilizer prices” to register their displeasure with the insecurity in Bawku.
