Private legal practitioner Bernard Owiredu Donkor has described the commentary of social media personality Ghana Jollof as a replicated outcome of what US-based Ghanaian commentator Kevin Taylor has been doing over the years, arguing that several young people on social media are modelling his style.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Mr Owiredu Donkor said the issue goes beyond Ghana Jollof, noting that young people across different political affiliations have adopted similar approaches to political commentary on social media.
“Ghana Jollof, whoever, all this harmful speech are replicative outcomes of what Kevin has been doing over the years. A lot of people are modelling his style.”
Mr Owiredu Donkor said the pattern is not limited to Ghana Jollof, pointing to young people who may identify with either the NDC or NPP but, in his view, have adopted Kelvin Taylor’s style of commentary.
“Not just Ghana Jollof. There are so many young people on social media. They could be NDC, they could be NPP, but you could see clearly. There’s a clear copying and modelling of Kevin Taylor’s style.”
He further explained that some of the commentators have adopted different identities online but continue to copy Kelvin Taylor’s approach.
“Some of them have some funny names. They are modelling him. They are just copying him. Why? Because he’s got attraction.”
Mr Owiredu Donkor’s comments come amid a wider discussion about hate speech, abusive language and harmful content on social media, including concerns over how such commentary should be addressed while protecting legitimate political criticism, commentary and dissent.
