Ghana pledges 1,000 scholarships to ECOWAS youth in symbolic unity move

President Mahama has announced that Ghana will provide 1,000 fully funded university scholarships to students from across the ECOWAS sub-region.

The move, unveiled at the 50th anniversary launch of ECOWAS, is being hailed as a symbolic and strategic investment in the region’s future.

“This is not just a gesture,” Mahama said.

“It is an act of solidarity. It is a bridge to a future where our young people will grow up seeing each other not as foreigners, but as partners.”

The initiative aims to strengthen cultural ties and promote a shared identity among West African youth. It also aligns with broader efforts to build human capital across the region, particularly in areas such as technology, health, governance, and environmental sustainability.

“The future of ECOWAS lies in the hands of its youth,” Mahama said. “We must give them the tools and opportunities to lead the region into the next 50 years.”

The scholarships will also include opportunities for exchange programs and joint research initiatives, enhancing academic cooperation across borders.
