Spokesperson for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum has openly addressed the ongoing suspension of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) following the violent clashes that occurred between players, officials, and fans of Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko last Sunday.
The suspension, as outlined in an official GFA statement, was implemented in order to provide the association with the necessary time to engage with key stakeholders and thoroughly discuss the consequences of the violence.
The GFA emphasized that this decision was made to assess the situation, consult with relevant parties, and develop comprehensive measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
In an interview with Max FM, Henry Asante Twum was candid about the uncertainty surrounding the timeline for the league’s resumption. When asked about a potential return date for the GPL, he was unable to provide a specific answer, confirming that the GFA had yet to set a clear plan for the league’s restart.
“For now, the resumption of the Premier League is unknown. The FA has decided to hold onto the competition until further notice.
“At this point, the other competitions have not recorded any incident. Nothing has happened in the other leagues. And then also, you don’t have to forget there’s always the calendar to follow,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, along with Joseph Kyeremeh and Agyemang Duah Owusu who were arrested by the Ghana Police in relation to the violence appeared before court on Tuesday, February 4.
Baffour Awuah and Kyeremeh were granted bail of GHC500,000 each with two sureties, and their passports were seized. They are required to report to the police daily for two weeks. Owusu, whose home was found with a pistol and bloodstained clothing, has been remanded for two weeks.
The trio will appear in court again on February 17, 2025.
