Ghana has signed an agreement with Shell and Chevron to explore and develop petroleum resources in the South Deepwater Tano Block, opening a new chapter in the country’s upstream oil and gas sector.
The Government of Ghana, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Shell Overseas Holdings Limited and Chevron Sub-Saharan Africa Ventures Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering the acquisition of petroleum exploration and production rights over the block.
The agreement was signed in Accra on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, on the sidelines of the opening of Africa Oil Week 2026.
GNPC Chief Executive Kwame Ntow Amoah signed the MoU on behalf of the Corporation.
The agreement brings together Ghana’s national oil company and two major international energy companies as the country seeks to expand exploration activity in its offshore petroleum sector.
The South Deepwater Tano Block is located in Ghana’s deepwater offshore area and is expected to provide another opportunity for petroleum exploration and potential production.
The signing marks an important step towards determining the commercial potential of the block and advancing Ghana’s broader efforts to attract investment into its upstream petroleum industry.
Further activities under the agreement will be subject to the necessary regulatory and contractual processes.
