A Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa has died shortly after arriving in Ghana as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the deceased passed away at the Emergency Medical Reception at the Accra International Airport at 6:55pm on Friday, August 14, 2026.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in the country at 5:50pm aboard an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry said reports from fellow passengers indicated that the deceased’s health condition began to deteriorate about 30 minutes before the flight touched down in Accra.
“A medical emergency team that was on standby at the airport to receive him attended to him upon arrival,” the Ministry said.
It added that despite efforts to save his life, “the deceased passed away and was confirmed dead by doctors at 6:55pm after all attempts failed.”
The Foreign Ministry has begun steps to inform the deceased’s family and has arranged for the remains to be deposited at the Police Hospital for autopsy.
The government has not yet disclosed the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding the health condition that led to his death.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will provide further information after formally engaging the bereaved family.
The deceased was among Ghanaian nationals being brought back from South Africa under a government-led evacuation exercise.
The Foreign Ministry expressed deep sadness over the death and said further updates would be issued as more information becomes available.
