Ghanaian gospel music has lost one of its cherished voices, veteran gospel musician and songwriter Bernice Offei, who has reportedly died at the age of 63.
Bernice Offei was celebrated for her inspirational music and a career that produced some of Ghana’s enduring gospel songs, including Hold On, Life Is Short and Kaa She Gbeyei. Her music, often centred on faith, perseverance and the realities of life, earned her a devoted following over the years.
Her death comes only days after concern swept through the country when she was reported missing after she was last seen in Accra on September 1, 2026. She was subsequently found safe, bringing relief to her family, colleagues and fans.
The episode briefly placed the veteran musician at the centre of public attention, with fans and well-wishers expressing concern over her whereabouts before news of her safe return emerged.
Offei was not only known for her singing but also for her songwriting. She built a reputation for producing gospel music with strong messages and themes drawn from everyday life and Christian faith. Her official music catalogue includes Hold On, Life Is Short, Kaa She Gbeyei, It’s By Grace, Nyame Kokroko, N’adom Ara Kwa and several other gospel recordings.
She also enjoyed recognition from the Ghanaian music industry, winning the Best Female Vocal Performance and Songwriter of the Year awards at the 2009 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. She had earlier established herself as a gospel recording artiste while also pursuing a professional career in banking.
Her musical journey included several albums, among them We Are Victors, Hold On, Me Kosu, Grateful and Life, further cementing her place among the veteran voices of Ghanaian gospel music.
For many Ghanaians, however, Offei’s greatest legacy remains the message in her songs. Life Is Short offered a reflection on the brevity of life, while Hold On encouraged listeners to remain steadfast in difficult moments. Her music consequently travelled beyond entertainment to become a source of encouragement and faith for many listeners.
