An 11-year-old Ghanaian twin brothers have died after drowning in a river in Spain in what authorities believe was a tragic accident after they entered the water to cool off following a football game.
Emery and Emmett Acheampong lost their lives in the Ter River in the town of Manlleu on Monday, July 13, 2026, leaving their family and the local community in shock.
According to a family member, the boys had left home to play football and were expected to return by 9:00 p.m. for dinner. When they failed to come home, their father alerted the authorities, triggering an urgent search operation.
The Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, joined rescue teams, specialist divers and drone units in an overnight search for the missing brothers.
Their bodies were discovered in the Ter River on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 14.
Investigators believe the twins entered the river to cool down after playing football but were unable to swim well and drowned. Authorities have described the incident as a tragic accident.
The loss has deeply affected the community of Manlleu. In response, the City Council declared two days of official mourning and observed a minute of silence in memory of the young brothers.
