Ghanaians don’t appreciate my father enough – Shegah

Ghanaian Dancehall diva, Mildred Mark Hansen, who goes by the stage name, Shegah, has stated that her father the late Jerry Hansen of Rumblers International Band fame’s legacy has been “under-appreciated “.

In 1961, the alto saxophonist Jerry Hansen and nine musicians left the semi-professional Black Beats to form the fully professional Ramblers Dance Band.

The Ramblers Dance Band, nearly eight years old (in 1969) introduced glamour into the West African Highlife Scene. The Band provided its dance fans with their Highlife tunes, while those who preferred to listen supplied the necessary innovations to the traditional forms.

The duet vocal technique employed by this band was very successful. The highlife is West Africa’s own beat. It is older than the ‘Souls’, or the ‘Twist’ and even the ‘Rock and Roll’.

In an exclusive interview with Gideon Okyere Anim “Gatusso” on the Original 91.9FM’s holiday drive, the daughter of the music legend expressed her dissatisfaction towards Ghanaians not hero-worshipping her father.

She believes her dad hadn’t been properly acknowledged.

“My father, the late Jerry Hansen helped and contributed his quota to what many young people are celebrating today as Ghana music “.

“My dad, aside from founding the Rumblers band, was a founding member and first President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA). However, after his death, most of his hard work has not been appreciated”.

” Generally, the way Ghanaians easily forget their legends and heroes is very unfortunate, “I feel the pain at times.”

Shegah who used to be part of the female music trio, Tripple M, is currently out with a new single titled Cool Chop.

  • That’s true we don’t hear much about Jerry Hansen. Oh why?

  • You yourself should have kept your original name instead of Shega to keep your Dad’s memory alive.
