Former Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Sports, Youth and Culture and Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Committee, Kobla Mensah Wisdom Woyome has urged Ghanaians to play an active role in supporting the country’s football culture instead of leaving the responsibility solely in the hands of government.
Kwabla Woyome said football development requires a collective national effort to revive the passion and pride associated with the game.
“This current government is building the future of football from behind the scenes,” he said on Original Sports on Original FM/TV on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
Speaking on Ghana’s sports development agenda, Woyome stressed that sports, particularly the Commonwealth Games, can serve as a powerful tool for national development and economic growth.
“Our sole aim is to use sports, especially the Commonwealth Games, as a tool for national development,” he stated.
He explained that Ghana intends to leverage the Commonwealth Games platform to market the country internationally while boosting local industries and employment opportunities.
“The main goal of this major initiative is to use the Commonwealth Games as an opportunity to promote Ghana on the global stage,” he noted.
“We want to use this opportunity to showcase our local industries to the global market and also create jobs locally. We want the sports sector to also contribute significantly to Ghana’s GDP.”
Woyome further emphasised that sports can play a transformative role in the country’s development if properly harnessed.
“We want to market Ghana through sports. Sports can be a tool for the development of Ghana,” he added.
Touching on local football, he expressed optimism that traditional clubs such as Accra Hearts of Oak SC and Asante Kotoko SC can help restore excitement and public interest in Ghana football.
“We can achieve a lot at Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko to restore the passion and love for Ghana football,” he said.
On preparations towards the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Woyome disclosed that no final decision has been taken regarding travelling supporters to Scotland.
“We have not yet taken a decision on travelling supporters to Scotland for the 2026 Commonwealth Games,” he stated.
