Ghana’s “Big Push” road infrastructure programme is set to transform the nation’s economic landscape, with Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza affirming that the initiative is the bedrock of the country’s 24-hour economy agenda.
Speaking at the Jubilee House during the Government Accountability Series, Mr. Agbodza emphasized that the “Big Push” is not just a political slogan, but a strategic programme intended to modernize transportation, lower food prices, and stimulate commerce across the country.
“If you’re doing business or farming in Wa, and your goods must reach Takoradi or Accra, the condition of the road should not be your greatest challenge,” he said. “The Big Push is how we solve this.”
He announced that comprehensive engineering studies and cost estimates have already been completed for dozens of projects.
The Ministry of Finance has issued commencement authorisations for projects that will soon break ground, including the construction of a new bridge over the Oti River at Dambai, the full rehabilitation of the Wa-Bolga corridor, and dualisation of key highways such as Winneba–Mankessim and Cape Coast–Takoradi.
Mr. Agbodza was clear that the government would only initiate projects that have secured funding, marking a departure from the previous administration’s approach, where projects were often awarded with no financial backing.
“If it’s not in the budget and there’s no money, we won’t touch it,” he declared.
The “Big Push” is also expected to have a direct impact on inflation, particularly food prices.
According to the minister, a major component of food costs is transportation, not farmgate pricing. By improving road connectivity between rural production zones and urban markets, the government hopes to reduce the logistics burden on traders and transporters.
“Food is not expensive at the farm. The problem is getting it to the market.”
“It’s not about Adaklu or any one district. It’s about Ghana,” Agbodza stressed.
