Seasoned Ghanaian journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has expressed his discontent with the inconsistent application of justice in Ghana’s judiciary system.
He questions the haste in resolving the parliamentary vacant seats controversy case while the SALL case remains stalled.
According to him, the Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonoo, deemed Parliament’s brief recess a “constitutional crisis” and expedited the case filed by the leader of the NPP group in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin.
However, when President Akufo-Addo refused to sign Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, passed by Parliament in February, the Supreme Court has been slow to act.
The outspoken journalist emphasizes the unfairness, stating, “What is the point in declaring a constitutional crisis over lack of parliamentary proceedings when the outcome of parliamentary proceedings is ignored by the executive and the judiciary doesn’t see it fit to expeditiously resolve the matter brought before it?”
He also highlights the constituency of SALL, which has been without representation in Parliament for four years due to a prolonged court case.
Manasseh Azure Awuni argues that if SALL were an NPP stronghold, the Electoral Commission would have expedited the legal processes to facilitate an election.
“The average Ghanaian with some modicum of honesty in their blood would agree that… The Electoral Commission would have completed all legal processes to pave the way for an election there,” he notes.
