Ghana’s mining future brightens: Engineers gain global exposure

Ghana’s Minerals Commission is making strides in building a robust mining sector, with a significant number of engineers gaining international exposure and expertise.

According to Martin Ayisi, Chief Executive Officer of MinCom, the country’s engineers are undergoing training in top mining destinations worldwide.

“We have five engineers training at Nevada Gold Mines in the US, which boasts 12 open pits and 19 underground mines,” Ayisi revealed.

“This exposure to high-level skills and training will certainly change the face of MinCom in the next two to five years.”

Some of the engineers benefiting from this initiative include Bright Arko, who has spent a year underground in Nevada, and Emmanuel Awunyo, who has completed almost seven months of training at an open pit mine since January 2025.

Others include Gilbert Djanetey and Godwin Kpedzroku, currently at the South Dakota School of Mines, and Isaac Somiah, a geotech inspector from the Koforidua office.

Beyond Nevada, Ghanaian engineers are also gaining experience in other parts of the world. Two ladies, Sandra Donkor and Harriet Tetteh, have completed their education under a 50% scholarship at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and are now working at Freeport McMoRan, a major mining conglomerate.

In Canada, three engineers – Prince Suwieh, Isaac Agyepong, and Joshua Azorliade – are working underground with prominent mining companies.

Ayisi highlighted the significance of this global exposure, saying, “Our engineers have US, Australia, Canada, and UK exposure and experiences, so no matter where companies come from, we know their style.”

With 19 engineers in Australia, four at Curtin University studying metallurgy, and others in the UK, Ghana is poised to benefit from this knowledge transfer.

The MinCom boss expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Just wait and see MinCom by 2027 and 2028 when they keep returning in droves.”

This investment in human capital is set to pay dividends for Ghana’s mining sector, with potential improvements in efficiency, productivity, and overall performance.
