Political Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has launched a strong critique of current Energy Minister John Jinapor, blaming him for Ghana’s ongoing power sector challenges.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Tonto described Jinapor as “the most incompetent and talkative minister” to have served under President John Dramani Mahama.
According to Tonto, the power crisis Ghanaians are enduring today stems directly from reckless decisions made nearly a decade ago when Jinapor first held the energy portfolio during the Mahama administration.
“The most talkative minister I’ve ever come across is John Jinapor,” Tonto said. “The challenges we face today in the energy sector are not because of Nana Akufo-Addo, but rather the result of decisions made by President Mahama in 2015.”
Central to his claims is the controversial “take-or-pay” power purchase agreements signed during Mahama’s tenure.
Tonto argued that Jinapor’s role in those deals locked Ghana into costly energy contracts, many of which required payment for power not consumed — a financial burden the current administration has been struggling to manage.
“John Jinapor’s reckless decision nine years ago is the reason Ghanaians are suffering today. He must be honest and stop pretending that the previous Akufo-Addo administration is to blame for the energy crisis,” Tonto insisted.
Tonto further accused Jinapor of political dishonesty, claiming the Energy Minister is misleading Ghanaians by blaming the current crisis on the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government instead of admitting fault from the Mahama era.
The energy sector has recently come under intense public scrutiny as citizens and businesses grapple with inconsistent power supply and increasing utility costs.
