Ghana’s security services donate GHC1 million to MahamaCares Health Fund

Ghana’s security services have jointly donated GHC1.02 million to support the MahamaCares Health Fund, a flagship initiative by President John Dramani Mahama aimed at financing treatment for non-communicable diseases.

The donation was announced on Friday during a ceremony at the Jubilee House, where Inspector General of Police COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno presented the cheque on behalf of all contributing agencies.

Police Lead Donation Drive

The Ghana Police Service led the charge with a contribution of GHC580,000, forming the bulk of the total amount. They were followed by the Ghana Immigration Service, which donated GHC100,000. Other contributors included:

Ghana National Fire Service – GHC50,000

Ghana Prisons Service – GHC50,000
National Intelligence Agency – GHC50,000

Narcotics Control Commission – GHC10,000

Gaming Commission – GHC50,000G

hana Refugee Board – GHC5,000

National Peace Council – GHC5,000S

mall Arms Commission – GHC10,000

In a show of personal support, Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed contributed GHC50,000, while his deputy added GHC30,000.

Voluntary Support from Within

Speaking on behalf of the security services, IGP Yohuno explained that the donation stemmed from voluntary decisions made during senior-level consultations across agencies.

“At our various meetings, we met at our senior level, and all the senior officers have willingly contributed to the care,” he said.

Yohuno emphasized the motivation behind the gesture, noting that while security personnel receive government healthcare support, many Ghanaians battling chronic illnesses have no safety net.

“Those of us in the security services, we are fortunate that when we are not well, the government is there to take care of us. But there are people over there who have nobody to take care of them,” he added.

“This is Just the Beginning”
The IGP pledged ongoing support to the MahamaCares fund, stating that Friday’s donation is only the first of several future contributions.

“The support we are giving is just the beginning of many other supports to follow,” he assured President Mahama.

Launched in April 2025, the MahamaCares Health Fund is designed to provide financial assistance for Ghanaians suffering from non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart conditions, diabetes, and kidney failure.

President Mahama has stressed that such illnesses account for roughly 40% of deaths in Ghana and are among the most expensive to diagnose and treat.
