GHS condemns assault at Akoti Health Centre

The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has condemned a violent attack at the Akoti Health Centre in the Assin Fosu District and has called for immediate police action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 11 January 2026, while health workers were providing emergency care to patients at the facility, according to a statement issued by the Directorate.

In an official statement signed by Dr Mrs Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum Nyarko, Central Regional Director of Health Service, she said two injured persons were brought from Assin Wurakese for treatment following an alleged assault. While medical staff were attending to them, the alleged assailant also arrived at the facility to seek medical attention.

Moments later, a group of individuals stormed the health centre wielding offensive weapons and violently attacked the alleged assailant within the premises. The attack took place in the presence of health workers, patients and visitors, triggering panic and posing a serious threat to lives, property and the safety of the facility.

The Directorate said the Ghana Police Service has been formally notified and urged to promptly investigate the incident, arrest all those involved and increase police visibility and security support at the Akoti Health Centre.

It said the measures are necessary to restore confidence among health workers and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential health services without fear or intimidation.

The Central Regional Health Directorate stressed that all acts of violence within health facilities are unacceptable, noting that health institutions are neutral and protected spaces dedicated to the preservation of life.

The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of health workers, patients and visitors across the region, adding that it will continue to work with security agencies and other stakeholders to prevent similar incidents.
