GJA President slams politicians over election violence

Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) President Albert Dwumfour has condemned attacks on journalists during the 2024 general election, emphasizing the importance of a safe and free press in Ghana’s democratic process.

At a media briefing in Accra on December 7, Albert Dwumfour expressed frustration over incidents involving military personnel at polling stations, despite assurances of their absence.

He specifically highlighted shooting incidents in Nyankpala and Ahafo Ano constituencies, stressing concerns about journalists’ safety in volatile environments.

He recalled a 2020 incident where journalist Pius Asiedu was severely injured while reporting, undergoing three surgeries with no full recovery.

The GJA president reiterated the association’s commitment to addressing electoral process excesses and ensuring journalists’ safety.

He urged security forces to remain vigilant and protect journalists during and after the elections.
