The World Congress of Assemblies of God was first held in Seoul, Korea in 1994. Since then, the Congress, normally held every three years, has been held in Sao Paolo – Brazil, Indianapolis- USA, Sydney – Australia, Lisbon-Portugal, and Madras – India. The rest are Springfield Missouri – USA and Singapore. The 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID. It was at the 2023 event in Madrid Spain that the baton for the 2026 Congress was handed to Ghana.

Globally, Assemblies of God is 110 years old, tracing its root to the Azusa Street revival in the US regarded as the greatest revival experienced in the world’s history. The Ghana Assemblies of God is 93 years old. It was pioneered by the US church. The Ghana Church has contributed significantly to the growth and development of Ghana in all aspects of the nation’s life. Indeed, the Ghana Church is the first Pentecostal church to use social activities such as the establishment of health and educational facilities to evangelize. Ghana is an important member of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship. Its contributions to the body of Christ are enormous.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the global chairman of the Assemblies of God worldwide, Reverend Dominic Yeo said the Assemblies of God is one of the largest and fastest-growing denominations globally. “There are currently more than 170 members of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, representing more than 442,000 Churches and 85 million adherents.

The purpose of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship is to pursue the fulfillment of the Lord’s command to evangelize the lost in the shortest possible time, providing them the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel in all its fullness, by encouraging and assisting one another, promoting harmonious relationships, and seeking the most effective means of its accomplishment under the dynamic leadership of the Holy Spirit.”

He commended Ghana for sustaining its democracy, insisting that the choice of Ghana is indeed a good choice. “The choice of Ghana for the upcoming congress was informed largely by the peaceful and free environment Ghana has had over the years. Ghana has demonstrated that it is the beacon of hope for Africa by democratically and peacefully electing the political leadership every four years.”

He charged Ghanaians to continue to co-exist peacefully, irrespective of their political, religious, or ethnic differences, while commending Ghanaians for their tolerance. He prayed for peace in the 2024 elections, believing that all political, security, and other actors in the electoral process will do their jobs well in the interest of peace.

The upcoming congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship in 2026 is expected to bring a lot of economic benefits to Ghana. Church leaders say it will push Ghana higher on the world stage, grow businesses, and attract investors to the country. The World Assemblies of God Fellowship has members in almost every country on earth. With about 86 million members globally and 24 million in Africa alone, the church expects delegates from all over the world to attend the congress here in Accra in 2026.
